Give yourself some credit...
I’ve noticed something interesting in the self-improvement space these past few years,
And it’s our willingness (or unwillingness) to celebrate our accomplishments…
To give ourselves credit for the things we’ve achieved and the progress made.
I have no idea when this began, or why.
But we seem to have built a society around the inverse of what is best for us.
When trying to improve, try new things, or break away from the pack, it’s become common for us to downplay our progress…
To beat ourselves up and put ourselves down.
And the worst part of all is that it’s more accepted than its counterpart.
If you put yourself down, no one would blink an eye.
“Yeah, maybe you’ll have better luck next time.”
“I knew that social media business wouldn’t work.”
“Time to get back to reality then, eh?”
But if you try to do the opposite…
People get upset that you are too confident and proud of the achievements you’ve made.
“Well, he’s just a cocky prick.”
“You know she just got lucky.”
“Talk about being privileged.”
It’s as if the tallest poppy syndrome has taken over our society completely.
Everyone wants to support the underdog until the underdog makes too much progress,
And then all of a sudden they’re the enemy.
Now, I don’t know if other’s reactions are rooted in jealousy, envy, insecurity, or perhaps a combination of them all.
But what I do know is that it’s incredibly unhealthy for all of us.
It’s a mentality that keeps us all at the bottom.
Just a bunch of crabs in a bucket…
It would be good for us all to remember that one’s success is not indicative of another’s failure.
Personal and professional opportunities are abundant for us all.
And I believe we should be building each other up rather than shrinking ourselves down.
But that all starts on a personal level by…
Celebrating your own achievements!
Give yourself some credit.
Don’t downplay your accomplishments.
Hold your head high.
Because the relationship you have with yourself is the most important of all.
So, there is no reason you shouldn’t pat yourself on the back from time to time.
Take some time along the way to smell the roses,
Look at how far you’ve already come,
Be proud of that progress,
And say “Yeah, I did do that, and this is only the beginning!”
Stay confident friends!
See you next week,
